Autumn in Capdepera, Mallorca, is a magical time. The mild temperatures, the cool breeze and the absence of crowds make this period an ideal time to visit this charming corner of the island. Here is a list of things not to be missed during your autumn getaway to Capdepera.
We begin with an obligatory visit to the Castell de Capdepera. This medieval castle, built in the 13th century, stands majestically on a hill and offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Mediterranean Sea. Explore its walls, towers and a chapel that immerse you in the history of the island.
Capdepera Castle stands majestically in the northeast of Mallorca, atop a hill that affords a privileged view of the island’s interior, the surrounding coastline and the Menorcan channel that separates these two sister islands. This imposing fortified enclosure, whose construction began in the 14th century by order of King Jaume II, played a crucial role in protecting the local population against the pirate attacks that were frequent at the time. At its peak in the 16th century, it housed up to 125 dwellings inside, but over time, the castle was left uninhabited and became a military post under the supervision of a governor until 1854, when it was finally abandoned altogether. In 1856, through a public auction, the castle changed hands and became the property of Josep Quint Zaforteza. It was not until 1983, after numerous negotiations with the heirs, that the Capdepera Town Council recovered ownership of the castle. Currently, a board of trustees is in charge of its management and conservation. This historical monument has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), the highest level of protection for historical heritage in Spain. Moreover, it can be visited all year round, with the income from the ticket office going to finance the preservation and conservation of the rich cultural heritage of the municipality of Capdepera. Capdepera Castle is a living witness to the history of the region and a jewel of Mallorcan heritage worth exploring.
For craft enthusiasts, the Museu de la Llata is an interesting stop. Here you can discover the tradition of llata, a palm weaving technique, through fascinating exhibitions and live demonstrations. The so-called Governor’s House of this historic castle houses the Museu de la Llata, which displays a wide variety of handicrafts made from palm heart (baskets, hats, brooms, etc.). An audiovisual explains how the leaves of this palm tree, which is native to Mallorca, are harvested, dried, bleached and plaited.
If you are a nature lover, the Casa March Botanical Gardens are a hidden treasure. This green oasis houses a collection of exotic and indigenous plants in a serene setting. It is a perfect place for a relaxing stroll among the autumn flora.
Sa Torre Cega is a masterpiece of historical architecture, built in 1915. Its name comes from the defence tower that once stood on its site. In the 1960s, the house was redecorated by the Parisian interior design studio Maison Jansen, and the current gardens were designed by landscape architects Russel Page and Leandro Silva. Here you will find an impressive collection of outdoor sculptures, integrated into an exceptional garden setting.
