Visit the defensive tower of Canyamel and climb up the winding stairs, right up to the top roof tower, where the whole beautiful valley of Canyamel stretches out before you. The guides will explain how the local inhabitants defended themselves against pirate attacks.
This fortified tower is of Moorish origin and is an integral part of the history of the conquest of Mallorca by King James I in the 13th Century.
It was built to watch over the coast and to provide a refuge from the frequent raids by corsairs and invading forces. This place of refuge for the population and defence of the fertile valley of Canyamel rises strong and solid to a height of 23 metres. Its sturdy square base and well preserved state give it a special charm that appeals to all visitors. Its impressive Gothic style architecture and its own special features make it one of the most striking buildings of its type in Europe and it is unique on Mallorca.
