Next Saturday, 25 January, a new edition of the Lighting of Towers, Watchtowers and Talayots for Human Rights will be held, a symbolic action that seeks to give a voice to migrants who risk their lives fleeing from despair, violence and injustice. This event has become an annual tradition that combines the vindication of human rights with the enhancement of the historical and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean region.

Recovering cultural heritage as a message of hope
The event not only has a humanitarian dimension, but also a cultural one. Mediterranean towers, watchtowers, talayots and fortifications, which historically served as points of communication and defence, are transformed into symbols of light and guidance towards a better future. In the words of the organisers: ‘The fire and smoke of the towers were in the past the light that showed the way to the safe harbour, and today we want it to be a reminder of the fundamental rights that unite us as humanity’.
The towers to be illuminated this year in Capdepera include:
Talaia de Son Jaumell
Esbucada Tower
Tower “Nova des Cap Vermell”
Capdepera Castle
