The magic of Alei-Alei, a tradition that combines fire and songs, has returned to Capdepera to fill Christmas Eve with light and joy. This festival, after decades of neglect, has once again taken centre stage in the heart of the community. This ritual, which combines fun, music and devotion to the Virgen de la Esperanza, traces its roots to the customs of the Pyrenees and has been carefully adapted to pay homage to the local patron saint.
The ritual has been adapted to maintain its essence: at dusk, the little ones carry their lit faies from the Castell de Capdepera, walking through emblematic places to the sound of traditional chanting, while the fire guides their steps towards the Plaça de l’Orient.
The arrival of the parade at the square marks the high point of the celebration. There, the music of the Agrupació Castell de Capdepera enlivens a dance that is open to all, while a solidarity chocolatada adds warmth to the evening and fosters unity among the participants.
The Alei-Alei not only revives an ancient tradition, but also reinforces the cultural identity of Capdepera. The older people relive their childhood memories, while the younger ones discover the value of the local heritage.
